Designed by Gensler, the Tower at PNC Plaza helped revitalize downtown Pittsburgh. Completed in late 2015, the project features the company’s corporate headquarters over 32 floors. The sustainable building was designed with its tenants in mind, creating collaborated connected spaces within.

As the architects at Gensler describe, “Gensler and its partners set a new standard for sustainable skyscrapers, devising an innovative, low-energy strategy to heat and cool the building. From its one-of-a-kind, breathable double skin to its innovative workplace strategy, the LEED® Platinum-certified tower drives building performance to new levels.”

PNC has made a commitment to sustainability constructing more LEED®-certified green buildings than any other global company. Also a Pittsburg native, and neighbor to PNC, PPG was specified on nearly all of the building’s glass, coatings, and paints. PPG Coraflon coatings were used on the interior and exterior of the PNC tower. As the representatives at PPG describe, “Based on FEVE resin technology, Coraflon Sunstorm powder coatings deliver exceptional durability and weatherability in a wide range of colors and glosses, including the sparkling mica finish featured on The Tower at PNC Plaza.”

The building was designed to be one of the greenest office buildings in the world with an energy efficient double-skin façade, water-based heating system, and chilled beam cooling system to produce 50 percent less energy than other buildings its size.

PPG’s Coraflon ADS employs Lumiflon FEVE resin technology that protects a coating against UV radiation, rain, salt, and other environmental deterrents, preventing coat degradation. The low-VOC fluoropolymer is ideal for high-exposure projects like the PNC Tower, as the FEVE resin ensures color and gloss retention of a coating which will allow the building to remain in pristine condition for decades.
