In downtown Brooklyn, NY sits the historic Macy’s department store. With the construction of the Wheeler, a new creative office structure above it, the Macy’s store was awarded a much-needed upgrade. In their first New York project, Shimoda Design Group, with the collaborative efforts of Perkins Eastman, completed the design.

The art deco style building was built in 1930 and the renovation required Macy’s to vacate the upper floors of the building to accommodate the new commercial construction. While Macy’s still occupies the first four floors, its street level access was reclad in a modern, sustainable building material.

The cladding by Pure + Freeform is a Prismatic Spritz aluminum finish, the representatives describe, “The design intent called for a copper-toned finish in the bent shape to complement the brick tones of the existing façade. We supplied Prismatic Spritz in our 3mm Wet Seal plate panels to clad the upper window displays. The material is dynamic in tone, appearing lighter and almost orange like in direct light while offering rich and textured brick-red tones in indirect light.”

The panels are enriched with Lumiflon FEVE resin technology. Coatings with Lumiflon FEVE resin technology offer benefits that many other coatings do not. The fluoropolymer provides unmatched weatherability, which helps prevent against coating degradation. FEVE-based coatings also help reduce lifecycle costs, as their hyper-durability allows a coating to resist degradation in the face of UV radiation, salt, and water for decades.
