Architects and designers help bring a client’s architectural and branding vision to life by creating buildings that communicate a distinct identity, quality, and purpose. Elements such as gloss, color, and finish help define a building’s identity and make it instantly recognizable. With a wide range of gloss levels, color options, and pigment options, FEVE coatings give design professionals and specifiers creative freedom to deliver facades that meet architectural needs and reinforce brand identity.
What are FEVE Coatings?
FEVE coatings are high-performance systems based on fluoroethylene-vinyl ether (FEVE) fluoropolymer resins. These materials are known for their exceptionally strong carbon-fluorine bonds, which give them outstanding resistance to sunlight, radiation, weathering, corrosion, and other environmental stressors.

Used primarily as resins (binder components) in architectural, industrial, aerospace, transportation, and infrastructure coatings, FEVE resins are engineered for applications requiring outstanding long-term durability and weather resistance. LUMIFLONÒ FEVE resins are the world’s first solvent-soluble fluoropolymer resins. They can be formulated into coating systems that cure either at room temperature or with heat.
Key properties of FEVE-based coating systems include:
- Excellent UV resistance, helping prevent degradation and color fading
- Long-term color and gloss retention for consistent aesthetics
- Superior corrosion and chemical resistance
- Reliable performance in harsh environments, including rain, wind, humidity, and pollution
- Broad design flexibility for façade color, glosses, and custom finish options
Why Architects and Coating Specifiers Choose FEVE Coatings
Aesthetics
Gloss levels and surface finishes play a significant role in shaping a building’s visual identity. FEVE coatings provide vibrant, clean colors and a wide range of gloss options. Compared with conventional fluoride coatings, FEVE coatings can be formulated from matte to high gloss, enabling a high degree of design flexibility to meet architectural requirements.
High-gloss finishes can create a striking, contemporary look with enhanced color vibrancy and reflectivity, while matte or satin finishes may convey sophistication, subtlety, or a natural aesthetic. This versatility allows architects and designers to emphasize architectural features and achieve distinctive visual effects.
Creative Freedom
FEVE resins support an extensive range of colors, gloss levels, metallic effects, and custom appearances. As transparent fluoropolymers with excellent pigment dispersibility, they can be used in both clear and pigmented paints, providing exceptional formulation flexibility.
Specifiers can develop distinctive color palettes and signature finishes that help create iconic, visually memorable buildings. Distinctive façades can become recognizable landmarks, strengthening brand visibility, enhancing visual appeal, and increasing property value.
Long-Term Design Integrity
Preserving a building’s original appearance is essential for maintaining both architectural intent and brand image. FEVE resins are engineered for exceptional coating longevity, helping coating systems retain color, gloss, and finish for decades with minimal maintenance.
Compared with conventional coating technologies, FEVE-based coatings exhibit significantly less fading, discoloration, and chalking when exposed to sunlight, weather, pollution, and other harsh environmental conditions. Their highly fluoropolymer structure helps maintain a strong protective barrier, limiting the penetration of corrosive agents and supporting the long-term integrity of underlying coating systems. With coating service life estimates of up to 60 years, FEVE coatings help ensure that buildings continue to reflect the designer’s vision for decades.
Reduced Environmental Impact, Maintenance, and Life Cycle Costs
Sustainability is a key priority in modern structures. FEVE-based paints and coatings contribute to these goals by significantly extending service life and reducing the frequency of repainting cycles. Because structures require recoating less frequently, owners can reduce maintenance costs, labor, material consumption, and operational disruptions.
Fewer repainting cycles also help reduce environmental impact by lowering the consumption of coatings, solvents, and other resources associated with maintenance. In addition, longer-lasting coatings can reduce VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions over the life cycle of a structure.

LUMIFLON FEVE Resin Options
Color Capabilities
Because FEVEs are transparent fluororesins, coating manufacturers can use them to produce both crystal clear coatings and richly pigmented finishes. Because FEVE resins are available in an extensive range of colors, including custom-matched options, coatings can be tailored to meet a wide range of aesthetic and performance requirements. FEVE resins are also available in different gloss levels, from flat to high-gloss.
FEVE-based coatings maintain gloss and color for 20 to 60 years, which is much longer than other coating types. They have been tested to meet demanding performance standards such as AAMA 2605 FEVE-architectural specifications, which require high levels of durability, including a minimum 50% gloss retention after ten years under accelerated weather conditions. FEVE-based coating systems are capable of meeting rigorous standards such as AAMA 2605, which call for exceptional durability which requires at least 50% gloss retention and minimal color change (less than 5 ΔE units) after ten years of weathering exposure.
A range of pigments, including red, yellow, green, blue, and violet in both mass tone and tint, have demonstrated strong durability in extended accelerated weathering tests (up to 10,000 hours), supporting strong resistance to fading and color change in exterior applications, with performance consistent with long-term field observations of FEVE-based coating systems.

Gloss Options
FEVE-based coatings can be formulated across a broad gloss range, from high-gloss, mirror-like finishes that create visual impact and emphasize architectural details to low-gloss and matte surfaces that deliver a sophisticated, contemporary appearance.
Depending on the formulation, gloss levels can reach approximately 90 gloss units (60°) for maximum depth, brilliance, and reflectivity. FEVE-based coatings can retain high gloss for more than 20 years. The combination of broad gloss flexibility and long-term gloss stability helps maintain the intended aesthetic appearance of architectural facades over time.

Special Effect Finishes
FEVE resins can be formulated with a wide range of effect pigments to achieve distinctive architectural finishes. These include bright metallic finishes that enhance depth and dimensional appearance.
In addition to metallic effects, FEVE coatings can be engineered with specialty pigments and formulation techniques to produce custom finishes tailored to unique architectural design requirements. These effects enable designers to develop signature façades, highlight architectural features, and achieve highly differentiated visual expressions while maintaining durability and weather resistance.
- Pearlescent coatings that create subtle color shifts and visual interest
- Mica-based finishes for enhanced texture and sparkle
Different Grades
FEVE resins are available in multiple forms to support a wide range of coating technologies, including solvent-based systems, powder coatings, environmentally friendly low-VOC and HAPs-free formulations, and water-based coatings.
- Solvent-based resins: In use for over 35 years, these ultra-weatherable resins can be formulated into coatings with a wide range of gloss and color. Grades such as LF552E are engineered to protect substrates, including steel and aluminum, in demanding environments, helping maintain long-term color and gloss retention under severe weather exposure.
- Waterborne resins: Water-based FEVE grades provide an environmentally friendly option that is non-flammable and less odorous. These formulations help reduce VOC emissions and improve the working conditions at coating facilities. Examples include water-emulsion-grade resins such as FE4300 and FE4400, as well as dispersion-grade resin FD1000. These water-based FEVE resins provide low-VOC alternatives for a range of coating applications and offer the added advantage of field application using conventional spray or roller methods, with air-drying capability for efficient on-site use.
- Solid-based resin and powders: These grades eliminate or significantly reduce the need for solvents, supporting compliance with modern air quality and VOC regulations. Powder coatings offer a more sustainable option with a smaller carbon footprint because they do not rely on volatile solvents in processing. Grades such as LF200F and LF916F are used in low-VOC formulations, while the FL710F resin was specifically developed for powder coatings. Powder coatings offer a more sustainable option with a smaller carbon footprint because they do not rely on volatile solvents in processing. They also can be applied direct-to-metal (DTM), high material utilization, and reduced waste through overspray recovery.
