With an emphasis on sustainability, it was imperative that the materials used in construction be of the highest performace. For the steel struts of the entire campus, a coating that would achieve AAMA 2605 level performance was requested. To provide the best possible solution, Americana Powder Finishing applied IFS Coatings’ IFS500 FP coatings enriched with Lumiflon FEVE fluoropolymer resin to these surfaces, a coating that exceeds the performance requirements of AAMA 2605.

LEED Platinum San Diego Airport Uses Exterior Steel With FEVE Coating

In a move towards sustainability, the San Diego International Airport sought to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum terminal design. Not only does the airport terminal utilize alternative energy sources and green building materials, it also features high performance, low volatile organic compound (VOC) coating systems from Tnemec. All exterior exposed steel, including canopies and two sky bridges, used Tnemec’s Series 1071V Fluoronar coating with Lumiflon FEVE fluoropolymer resins for long lasting protection against ultraviolet (UV) light, along with high gloss and color retention.

Fluorinated resins are known for high performance, particularly in long term, exterior durability. Fluoroethylene vinyl ether or FEVE resins, a family of fluorinated resins, have a unique alternating copolymer structure allowing them to be dissolved in solvent as well as emulsified in water for formulating liquid coatings. As environmental initiatives are becoming less compulsory and industry is taking proactive measures to protect the environment, waterborne and high solids paint is ever increasing in demand.

Upcoming Talk: Environmentally Friendly Fluoropolymer Resins for Coatings

LUMIFLON (Fluoroethylene vinyl ether or FEVE) fluoropolymer resins were developed over 30 years ago. These resins are used to make ultra-weatherable fluorourethane coatings for architectural, industrial, automotive, aerospace, and alternative energy markets. In some cases, topcoats made with these resins have expected lifetimes exceeding 60 years. These coatings are especially useful in areas where high levels of UV exposure are present, including desert areas and countries close to the equator.

The Contributing Factors To The Low Life Cycle Costs of FEVE Resins

Repainting and maintenance work on buildings, bridges, and other structures can cause both financial and operating disruptions. There are also significant environmental costs associated with repainting operations. FEVE resins minimize these costs. In addition to low VOC content, low life cycle costs make FEVE technology a more environmentally friendly choice.
