An intriguing building, the Independence Library and Apartments in Chicago serves a dual purpose. This “hybrid” design, as the designers at John Ronan Architects describe, combines a 16,000 square-foot library with 44 affordable apartments. The integration of the housing complex for senior citizens and the community library is part of a “co-location” building initiative bought about by the former mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel.

The John J. Bowen Center for Science and Innovation at Johnson & Wales University sits on the edge of the campus on a piece of reclaimed land. The land was reclaimed after the relocation of the major interstate in downtown Providence. The building features a variety of student and campus amenities including a café, outdoor space, and learning facilities which are visible from the busy street.

The Quad student residences at York University is a recently completed student housing community. The project, which consists of two mid-rise buildings, sits on the south side of Pond Road, east of Sentinel Road. The Quad was designed to meet a distinct need for student housing, the university historically has fewer on-campus options given its enrollment. Additionally, the surrounding area features an abundance of industrial and commercial properties, making off-campus housing difficult as well.
