International architecture studio, Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT), designed the Macquarie University Library back in 2011. The architects describe the library as, “…an innovative welcoming and inspiring landmark building for the University. It represents a new generation of library design—full of dynamic, collaborative, open spaces for learning, challenging the traditional notion of a library as a quiet, storage facility for printed materials.”

An intriguing building, the Independence Library and Apartments in Chicago serves a dual purpose. This “hybrid” design, as the designers at John Ronan Architects describe, combines a 16,000 square-foot library with 44 affordable apartments. The integration of the housing complex for senior citizens and the community library is part of a “co-location” building initiative bought about by the former mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel.

The new Central Library in Calgary was a collaborative project with architecture firms Snøhetta and DIALOG. As the architects at Snøhetta explain, “Calgary Public Library is one of the most actively used library systems in North America, where more than half of its residents are active cardholders, and accordingly, the new main branch was created for and inspired by its diverse inhabitants.”
