The Bailey’s Crossroads Skyline buildings in Arlington, VA were completed in the 1970s. The original black coatings used on the aluminum façade of the building had transformed to a dark brown, mud-like color that were in need of dire attention. In 2001, the building’s former owners, Charles E. Smith Co. then hired William Pegues of Weigh Design Group who contacted his representatives at PPG. They recommended Coraflon ADS with Lumiflon FEVE flouropolymer resin-based coating for its field applicability, durability and extensive color selection that match factory applied coatings.

The Story of Hell Gate Bridge And Its Faded Coating

In the early 1990’s, the bridge was completely recoated for the first time in over 80 years using $55 million appropriated by Congress. The color selected for the topcoat was known as “Hell Gate Red” a deep natural red. The coating was a 4-coat system, two of epoxy, a pigmented polyurethane coat, and a clear topcoat designed to preserve the red color of the bridge. Unfortunately, the bridge began to change color even before the repainting was completed.
