The Glasshoughton Wheel of Light in West Yorkshire, England, is iconic to the local community as it stands as a memorial to the Glasshoughton Colliery and Coke Works. From which the community was founded, the Glasshoughton Colliery and Coke Works has a long-standing history in the mining industry, with the wheel commemorating the thousands of workers, many of whom lost their lives from accidents and illness.
Placed at the headstock above the mine, the wheel was used to “raise and lower a rope attached to a cage which was used to transport men and materials into the mine,” representatives at A&I Coatings describe. The team at A&I was commissioned for the wheel’s refurbishment.
The team chose a Vitreset V115 Surface Tolerant Epoxy Primer and Vitreflon V195 two-pack fluoropolymer topcoat for the recoat supplied by Unova. The representatives further explain, “Use of fluoropolymer paint technology will ensure this structure looks great and remains free of corrosion for many years to come.”
The Vitreflon fluoropolymer topcoat features Lumiflon FEVE resin. High-performance coating systems that contain Lumiflon FEVE resin offer architectural surfaces a plethora of different benefits, all of which ultimately help maintain the structural integrity of the coatings.
Substrates featuring FEVE resin technology are provided with longevity and durability in addition to excellent color and gloss retention. In addition, anti-corrosion and graffiti properties, superior weatherability protect architectural coatings from UV radiation, water, salt, and other elemental deterrents that contribute to coating degradation.
Leader of Wakefield Council, Cllr Denise Jeffery, expressed to the Wakefield Express, “I am delighted that we have been able to take over the ownership of this wonderful memorial which embraces our district’s history and heritage. I know it means a lot to the local community, and once fully refurbished, it will shine bright for many years to come.”
