The EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center was established at a time where a diabetes care and research facility in southeastern Virginia was desperately needed. Named for philanthropist and businessman, Leonard Strelitz, who raised the $8 million required to renovate the center, the diabetes facility is located in Norfolk, Virginia and resolved a number of issues the original structure had. Problems the building had experienced included limited space that hindered the professionals’ work with a large number of patients and poor ventilation, which created an unpleasant smell that lingered.
The new building, a 47,000 square-foot structure, was redesigned with a number of state-of-the-art amenities and a few features that were sustainable, thus helping reduce energy consumption and lowering its impact on the environment.
Overall, the building boasts a sleek, contemporary aesthetic, with over 20,000 square-feet of ALPOLIC aluminum composite material. Fabricated and installed by Roof Services Corporation, the EVMS Streliz Diabetes Center’s exterior is enveloped in ACM with a Mica finish. The choice in cladding complements the institution’s dedication to modern innovation in the medicinal sciences and also satisfies the need for a beautiful material that is long-lasting and can withstand the harsh environment of a well-used health center.
Architects at PF & A design stated that the cladding “…works as a sound barrier and has increase energy performance using LEED criteria.”
The durability of the ACM is ensured by the application of Lumiflon FEVE resin. Corrosion-resistant, long-lasting, and low VOC, structures that feature an FEVE-based coating system are able to remain pristine conditions for decades without needing to recoat. Lumiflon FEVE resin technology provides coatings with outstanding weatherability capabilities, durability and excellent color and gloss retention.
