FIFA World Cup Brazil Glass Benches AGC Asahi Lumiflon FEVE Resin

The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil was not just a showcase of world-class soccer; it also highlighted cutting-edge technology in sports infrastructure. This was made possible by the collaborative efforts of AGC Chemicals, based in Exton, PA, and Tokyo’s Asahi Glass Co. Together, they created the official glass-encased player benches used across all 12 match venues, marking a significant upgrade from the benches provided for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

These benches were crafted entirely from AGC products and featured a chemically strengthened glass roof. Designed to withstand the elements, the glass was anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, and impervious to severe weather conditions. This durability ensured that the structural integrity of the benches remained uncompromised throughout the tournament, providing players with a comfortable and secure place to rest.

The technology used in these player benches was originally developed for small electronic devices like tablets and smartphones. This innovative application demonstrates the potential of futuristic glass materials for larger architectural projects, emphasizing that advancements in technology can transcend their initial scope.

Kazuhiko Ishimura, President and CEO of Asahi Glass, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I am delighted that our glass bench roofs will support one of this year’s greatest global sporting events, which will be enjoyed by people from every continent. This is a wonderful first step for us to show the world the evolution and potential of glass materials, and how they can change the future. By further developing our technologies, we plan to support the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.”

The design was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The glass panels were supported by fiber-reinforced plastic frames, coated with Lumiflon FEVE resin technology. The FEVE fluoropolymer provides unparalleled long-term color and gloss retention, while also protecting the surfaces from degradation, ensuring that the benches would remain as striking as they were on day one.
