“Erie on the Park” residential tower is a relatively new addition to Chicago’s impressive list of landmark architecture. Completed in 2002, the 25 story parallelogram-like, steel-frame and glass tower echoes Chicago’s modernist roots.
Erie on the Park’s hallmark exposed steel beams have earned it a reputation as one of the most striking and desirable towers in Chicago. When rust appeared on its steel beams, Erie on the Park owners realized the building’s distinctive facade was endangered.
Due to the extensive use of steel, the project required a field-applied coating system that was cost efficient, offered an extended maintenance cycle and a long-term warranty. All-Tech Decorating Company was challenged to find a coating that met the project requirements and could also be applied in a manner that minimized inconvenience to the building’s occupants. The unique design of the building made reapplication extremely difficult but ATD was commended on their ability to successfully apply the coating within time and budget constraints.
LUMIFLON® FEVE resin was specifically chosen for its long term color and gloss retention as well as its ability to keep the steel clean as it repels surface dirt and contaminants. The ultra-durable fluoropolymer from PPG was optimal for the building restoration due to its resistance to chalking, weathering, marring, and abrasion.
All-Tech Decorating Company of Romeoville, IL, specializes in the application of high performance coatings on metal substrates. ATD selected LUMIFLON®, an air dry fluoropolymer coating system, because it met project requirements in several key ways; LUMIFLON® can be field applied; it eliminates the need for a clear coat, which saves product and labor costs; it can be applied to a number of building materials, including steel; and it can retain color and gloss for 30 years.
ATD’s extensive field application experience and intelligent selection of a LUMIFLON® coating system restored the dramatic façade of Erie on the Park- ensuring it remains a Chicago landmark for decades to come.
LUMIFLON®, a product of the Asahi Glass Company, is a solvent-soluble fluoropolymer that offers distinct advantages to the architectural market. LUMIFLON® provides architects with the option of using brighter colors and higher gloss, allowing gloss values as high as 90; offers the flexibility to be heat cured or cured at ambient temperature, giving fabricators a choice between shop application or application in the field; and can be used successfully on a number of materials, including steel, aluminum, fiberglass, concrete and polycarbonate for 30 years without fading.
ATD is a division at All-Tech Decorating Company, Romeoville, IL, which specializes in the application of high performance coatings on metal substrates, and mostly architectural standing seam metal roofing and curtain wall systems that have a baked on fluoropolymer finish.
