Office Building Retrofitting Finds Inspiration in Japanese Art of Kintsukuroi

Kintsukuroi, translating to “golden repair,” is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with precious metals. The art regards the breakage and repair as part of the pottery’s history, and accentuates it rather than completely erasing or disguising it. Inspired by Kintsukuroi, designers at Gensler approached One Post Office Square with the intention of utilizing some of the already-existing features and enhancing it with architectural additions, creating something exquisite.

In Charleston’s historic district, the South Carolina Aquarium exists as part rehabilitation center, part hospital, and part exhibit. Along with nine main galleries, the aquarium also features the Sea Turtle Care Center. Visitors can watch as employees and volunteers work with sick and injured sea turtles, diagnosing and treating them with the goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat. The care center has nursed over 250 sea turtles back to health since its inception.

LEED-gold certified, the residential tower was built in place of the Government Center Garage, a well-known feature within Bullfinch Triangle, which was once a physical barrier that divided some of Boston’s most iconic historic neighborhoods.

Standing at a staggering 1,428 ft along Billionaires' Row, Manhattan's 111 West 57th, also known as Steinway Tower, has gained recognition as New York City's second-tallest building, as well as the world's most slender skyscraper. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development Group, the superstructure reached completion in 2022, with a height-to-width ratio of 24:1.
