Hopkins Architecture was commissioned to complete both a renovation and new addition for the Pitkin County Library in Aspen, Colorado. The library was designed to meet the needs of the surrounding community including children and teen areas, adaptive meeting spaces, and a plethora of sustainable, energy efficient technologies.

The architect’s design has a heavy user-focus, with the first-floor extension dedicated to a children’s area that allows for indoor and outdoor programming. Additionally, the first-floor features community spaces with collaborative rooms and lounges. The purposeful design in its entirety was meant to invoke workable, collaborative, communicative spaces for both library patrons and staff.

The exterior façade is enveloped in Pure + Freeform aluminum panels in an Aspen Patina finish. The representatives at Pure + Freeform describes, “…the façade complements the natural beauty of the location, while still responding to the light visual texture. Rejecting other metals due to cold or bright reflectivity, they opted for an exterior Crystal Basecoat finish treated with gold and copper pearl to create a general reflection of warmth.”

The panels are enriched with Lumiflon FEVE resin technology. Coatings with Lumiflon FEVE resin technology offer benefits that many other coatings do not. The fluoropolymer provides unmatched weatherability, which helps prevent against coating degradation. FEVE-based coatings also help reduce lifecycle costs, as their hyper-durability allows a coating to resist degradation in the face of UV radiation, salt, and water for decades.
