Protective coatings are utilized for asset preservation on many structures, but some of the most important and valuable assets in North America are welded steel potable water storage tanks. The coating technology available to the owner or specifier of these tanks is diverse, so it can be difficult to select the most sustainable solution.
In 2001, the Granbury municipal water tank became the first water tank in the United States to receive an exterior finish coat of Series 700 Hydroflon. Tnemec designed the Hydroflon series as a specialty fluoropolymer coating for tanks and exposed steel structures. In 2015 the Granbury tank was re-evaluated to determine the durability of the Hydroflon system.
While water tanks have historically provided clean treated water to a community, another essential function exists. Water tanks can serve as a source of local pride to the communities they serve. As the representatives at Tnemec Company describe, "Water tanks are functional, but they're also iconic – emblematic of a community's or district's sense of camaraderie and self-expression."
Renowned muralist Eric Henn painted the award-winning Destin tank design. Henn is known for his memorable motifs on water and chemical storage tanks around the country. The Destin water tank won the coveted 2017 Tank of the Year competition by Tnemec Company.
